As the name suggests, European Gypsies, or Romani people, shaped the breed to how it is today. A nomadic people, the Romani never stay in one area for long. They claim no national homeland, and their culture has existed for centuries. Instead of establishing permanent housing, the Romani people are constantly traveling. They pack their lives into wagons, called a vardo, and live in a traveling community of extended family and friends. That family wouldn't be complete without horses. For centuries, the Romani relied on horses to pull their caravans.
They were working animals, but they were also an important part of the Romani lifestyle. Children learned basic horsemanship at a young age and trained the horses for pulling, riding, and even general companionship. There is proportional curvature to the croup to enhance the powerful abilities of the hindquarters. The muscling is balanced throughout the body and the legs are straight and correctly aligned. While there is no set color standard for this breed, most are considered piebald having irregular patches of two colors, typically black and white or skewbald having irregular patches of white and another color properly not black.
The manes and tails of this breed are full and flowing giving them an elegant and majestic appearance. With the outstanding disposition of kindness, generous efforts, and faithful nature, the Gypsy horse is easily trainable for almost any discipline.
The fairytale look of the breed, as well as its origins, make them look right out of a fairytale. Height : Gypsy Vanners range from 13 — 15 hands in height equal to 52 — 60 inches.
Some registries put stricter restraints on the height range, while others divide the horses into Sections A and B according to size. Colour usually, but not always, piebald.
They may have solid colors, sometimes with splashed-white bellies Blagdon. Breed registries for this horse breed make no color requirement. Spotted horses used to be in fashion, but the pinto ones are more common today.
The profile should be flat, and the neck should be strong and muscular. The throat latch should be deeper than in lighter breeds. The ribs are well sprung, the back is short, the girth is deep, and the hindquarters strong.
They are gentle and intelligent. While different associations may have different standards, they all agree that the Gypsy Horse has to have abundant feathering.
