If the jacket is too big in the shoulders meaning the seam where the sleeve and shoulder meet extends past your natural shoulder you may be out of luck. Making the shoulders narrower on a structured garmet like a suit jacket or overcoat is an expensive, complex job for a tailor and usually the results aren't that great. Post pics and other members will be able to give you advice on fit.
I did however, almost buy some kenneth cole pants but i figured i'd way until tomorrow when i get paid. Joined Sep 10, Messages Reaction score 2. Since then, I realized the shoulder are WAY too wide on me I wear S suit jackets, with shoulder to shoulder measurements of 18 inches. I measured the shoulder to shoulder on this coat and it was a whopping 20 inches.
I thought about buying a new one, but did not want to risk getting the wrong size again via mail order I read somewhere that size small of the current model has 17" shoulders He is going to cut some excess fabric from the center back, resulting in a narrower shoulder.
He is also going to slim it down a bit, so it looks less like a tent. I'll let you know how it went when I pick it up on Thursday. Originally Posted by runes. Jumbie Distinguished Member. And if it you're facing a really frigid day, some extra mid-layers never hurt.
Can you alter a pea coat? Category: style and fashion womens outerwear. Should I tip my tailor? How much should a seamstress charge to replace a zipper? How should a peacoat fit a woman? How much should alterations cost? Should a parka be tight or loose? What can tailors do with dresses? Can you wear an overcoat without a suit?
Can you tailor a puffer coat? How much does it cost to get a coat lined? How do you make a jacket bigger? Are pea coats still in style? What is a long pea coat called? Unlike the Overcoat, a Peacoat should hit anywhere from mid to lower crotch.
On my model, above, the Peacoat ends right around lower crotch. Anything longer than lower-crotch or shorter than mid-crotch would throw off the proportions of your body and make you look weird.
Balancing proportions is a mistake a lot of guys make and can really influence how big or small you look in clothing. I never send more than 1 email per week - unless it's a really special reason - promise! How Should An Overcoat Fit?
Sleeves With your arms straight down, bend your wrist, so your palms are facing the ground, the sleeves should lightly touch the top of your hand. Body When buttoned, the coat should not be roomy, but should lie close to your body. Lapel Width For Overcoats, the lapels are pretty standard width, so this is a non-issue. How Long should an overcoat be? While changing the width of the shoulders is not recommended, it is possible to change the pad levels. Not all body types suit padded shoulders, and you can ask your tailor to remove them.
However, this means that the structure and appearance of the coat will change too. The length of a coat can only be shortened and not lengthened. If the length of your coat is too long for you, it can be shortened easily. However, shortening your coat length is recommended only if there is little work to be done. This is because if you shorten your coat way too much, even if there is plenty of extra material after undoing the seams, it can throw off the balance of the design since the spacing of the buttonholes and the pockets cannot be changed.
And nobody wants a coat that fits well but looks like it has been designed and sewn very poorly. If you want to shorten your coat length, make sure that you take it to a tailor. Some tailors even discourage shortening coat lengths since it affects where the pockets sit. But if your tailor says he can do it, or if you are doing it by yourself at home, make sure that you shorten it by no more than an inch.
The collar is one of the most defining elements of a coat. Reducing the size of the coat collar involves removing the collar fabric, sewing a larger sea, carefully creating a dart in the fabric of the coat, and then reattaching the collar to the coat. First, see if you can move the buttons. If not, check the side seams to see if there is enough allowance. You can also reduce or increase the size of the darts to alter trench coats.
If you wish to alter a wool coat, you need some amount of sewing experience. Wool coats are heavy and thick, and they are not an easy material to work with. If you are altering your wool coat on your own, you have to first determine where you need to make changes.
